A leading sports and creative activities project for young people in Aberdeen will now be able to extend its sessions thanks to the support of John Clark Motor Group.

The dealership has provided the Denis Law Legacy Trust and Robert Gordon University (RGU) Streetsport initiative with a brand new van which will enable the team to continue with the delivery of activities for the foreseeable future.

The project deploys mobile activity arenas into locations throughout Aberdeen City, offering free doorstep sports and other events directly to young people within their own communities, including seven priority neighbourhoods highlighted by theScottish Government as being in the 15% most deprived areas of Scotland.

The van will enable the project to reach more young people across the north-east, enabling access to a wide range of street sports including Freestyle Football, Street Hockey, Street Dance and Street Tennis which is now endorsed and supported by Judy Murray and Tennis Scotland.

Established in 2006 and based in RGU Sport, the award winningStreetsport team is soon to enter its tenth year of operation and are out and about in all weathers five nights a week, 48 weeks of the year and regularly have over 3,500 participations annually.

The van livery was designed by Jerry Muhonen, a Communication Design student from Gray’s School of Art and features an iconic image of the Streetsport Patron which also inspired the bronze statue of Denis at Aberdeen Sports Village.

Streetsport Development Officer Mark Williams described the new van as a “vital and significant” donation which will ensure the team’s ability to deliver activities into targeted locations and continue working with a variety of partners in and around the city.

He said: “Our current vans have been subject to wear and tear over the years and this new larger model will eliminate the need for our volunteers to have a trailer license affording us greater operational flexibility.

“Thanks to the generosity of Chris and the support of the John Clark Motor Group we can now respond to demand and expand on our current activities by accessing more areas of the city simultaneously reaching more local youths and communities.”

Chris Clark, Operations Director at John Clark Motor Group, said: “Supporting the local community is important to the Group and Streetsport is an excellent project to help youngsters embrace the benefits that sport can bring.  I am personally very passionate about exercise and it is a pleasure to know that by providing a van we are giving young people access to such a wide range of sports activities.”

The Streetsport project has engaged a significant number of disaffected young people who are often considered at risk of offending and has a proven track record of influencing and reducing the number of complaints and reports of anti-social behaviour and youth crime including wilful fire-raising.

The team is also looking forward to the Denis Law Legacy Trust’s annual fundraising dinner, which will again take place at the Marcliffe Hotel on Friday, November 13.

Graham Thom, Chairman of the Denis Law Legacy Trust, said: “All funds raised will help support the delivery of Streetsport and the annual Denis Law Community Football Festival which is hosted by Aberdeen Sports Village throughout July.”

Denis recently celebrated his 75th birthday so this year will be an extra special occasion.”

The Streetsport partnership network involves a number of other local agencies in its annual calendar of activities across the north-east and regularly collaborates with Aberdeen Community Safety PartnershipAbsafeSport AberdeenAFC Community Trust and the Aberdeen Youth Games amongst others.
